3) fuel

agreed - hell, I don't think I have 1 year of food around here. But I figure I just need 3 months worth - cause after 3 months there won't be a lot of competition for food. But, just in case I will have a good 6 months for 2 or 3 on hand - and ability to survive off the land.

Re: How many Americans have a year+ of food??

It depends if you consider frozen food. Assuming electricity but no food I would hazard that 1 in 10 Americans have a 1-3 months of food in reserve.

Perhaps 1 in 30 have 6 months food.

If electricity is lost then 1 in 10 have a months food on hand and perhaps 1 in 200 have more then 6 months food.

I'm pulling numbers out of a hat based on mere observations. Nothing to back this up.

I think that beyond 6 months and your talking people who have set aside food for lean times or wierd cases like local grocery shop owners.

If you owned a local grocery store and you realized that food shipments were stopped, would you still sell?

Most households have several pounds of flour, sugar, and cooking oil. Not exactly the height of palatibility but you can subsist on biscuits for some time.

14 Biscuits:
2 c. flour
4 tsp. baking powder
1/2 tsp. salt
1/4 c. shortening
3/4 c. milk

You can use powdered milk or no milk and use water. 14 biscuits yield 1600 - 1800 calories. Thats enough fuel for a day.

Roughly 3.6 cups of flour = 1 pound, so if you have a ten pound sack of flour and a can of shortening, and a box of powdered milk you could crank out around 200+ biscuits.

For one person, thats 21 days at 1200 calories a day.

Of course, its families and not bachelors that have 10 pounds of flour on hand so a family of four would burn through a 10 pound flour reserve in less then a week. OOOPS!

I wonder if anyone still uses flour barrels...196lbs/ea.

Alright, I'm done rambling. :10_1_19:

Probably closer to 1 in a million.

I pretty big on being prepared, but I can't say that I know of anyone outside a web forum that a year of supplies stocked up.

I'd love to myself, although storage and expense are big obstacles.

Re: How many Americans have a year+ of food??

The best reference I've found to the question about How many American's have a year supply of food was @ the USDA website under a white paper entitiled "Household Food Security."

Interesting stuff and worth a read.

It can be found over at http://www.ers.usda.gov/Publications/ERR66/ERR66b.pdf

The report doesn't answer the question but it is suggestive in other ways.

Specifically, the percentage of households that have inadquate food security right now. Food security being defined as, you don't run out of food.

Apparently 11% of households can't maintain consistent supplies of food currently.

Re: How many Americans have a year+ of food??

Hell, the problem is more basic than that: How many Americans have a year's worth of cash to cover living expenses?

If you think about how few people possess even enough cash to last 12 months, without using their soon-to-be-cut credit accounts, then it looks as if those who have that amount of cash may be in excellent shape, even without food, gold/silver, and ammunition.

Deflation time.

The only thing more important than cash or gold right now is water. I should have 60-75 gallons stashed in my basement, but I don't. I'm vulnerable to a multi-week infrastructure breakdown.

Re: How many Americans have a year+ of food??

I think 1 in 100,000 is too few and 1 in a million is ridiculous.

There are only 330 million people in the US. 1 in a millions means that only 330 people in the ENTIRE country have it covered. There might be that many just on this forum!

1 in 100k means only 3,330 people in the whole country have it covered.

Remember we're not just talking about normal people with jobs that have preps stored, we're talking about all the rich ****ers out there that have their own bunkers or whatever too. Even some celebrities have hideout/getaway places where they have stuff stored. What else to spend their hundred of millions on?

Granted there are also a lot that have 4 houses, 9 yachts, and 25 cars but no food. But I still think only 3,000 people in the whole US population is too low a number.

1 in 10,000 (30k people) might be more accurate.

But it's still speculation!

Actually, the number is quite small. If you factor in the people who will get their stuff confiscated/stolen by armed gangs - police included and leading the pack.
After you remove all of the people who told their neighbors or work mates about their stash. And take away those of us who discussed it on this forum, and the ones on other "monitored" forums.
After all that we find that there are, in fact, only 7 people left who will keep their year's hoard.

And no one knows who they are.:bear_thumb:

Re: How many Americans have a year+ of food??

Factor in my fat supplies, I might make it a year. Cant say much for the rest of family, but they failed to prepare :P

I kid, I kid.

I am significantly behind schedual, but prep as much as I am able to afford. I have four people in the household, 3 adults, one child. If we had to live off our reserves starting tomorrow, we could probably do 6 months if we were really sparring with it. 3 months with slightly rationed portions.

Water is another issue, but I live in florida and water is everywhere. Making it drinkable takes effort, but can be done.

Re: How many Americans have a year+ of food??

i think you are going to have a lot more than that if you think about all the farmers who have food resources just as a matter of business.

a lot of people on this board think about stored food just as mountain house
products stashed in old ammo crates, mylar lined buckets and pantries.

think cow or field of grain or forest of oak.

grandma with a small flock of chickens and a small backyard garden probably has a years supply of food.

especially if she does a bit of canning or baking

1 in 10,000?

Tough question RandyMatt.

There might be 1 in a 1000 who have a year+ of food.

There might be 1 in a 1000 who have sufficient precious metals.

There might be 1 in a 1000 who have adequate fuel stored away.

There might be 1 in a 1000 who have guns, ammo AND know how to use them.

Since having ALL of the above are dependent upon each other, how many Americans have all four areas covered ?

My guess is less than I in 10,000.

And importantly, how many have a safe bugout location that they are already living in or can reliable slip off to when TSHTF ?

Were on 10 acres in the country and all my loved ones are aware and ready to move in with us when TSHTF. It can be in a matter of as little as a few minutes; we are that connected. There will be security in numbers as I see it.

So out of the 1 in 10,000 who possess all four areas covered, how many have already bugged out or have a reliable bugout location ?

I dont think 1 in 10 at one end of the spectrum nor 1 in 100 at the other but feel splitting the difference at 1 in 50 is a good guess.

So if you were to multiply that 1 in 10,000 times 1 in 50, you get the seemingly fantastic 1 in 500,000. With roughly 330,000,000 population, thats only 660 who are adequately prepped in all areas AND bugged/bugging out.

And if you were to figure that it is an average of a couple bugged/bugging out together, that is only 330 couples !!!

How far can we take this in the figures is wide open to speculation. My guess is that the blessed ones will be so extremely rare that they will not be a big issue due to their sheer lack of numbers. That is, unless they are discovered and overrun by the hungry/ envious masses. Ergo, the bugout location. A sort of Noahs Ark.

I strongly recommend that others seek a possible bugout location. You dont have to buy a place but may be able to move in with a friend or family member who has a suitable location. Even cheap raw acreage may be workable for those with limited finances. There are options; we all need to explore them and as Ponce says, have a plan behind the plan behind the plan.

Living in the city or suburbs after TSHTF may work for a while but if things devolve enough, security will be unattainable. How do you put a price tag on peace of mind ?

I think what is coming will take all the wise thinking we can muster, even if we think we are well prepped. My oldest friend is a martial arts instructor. He says that the best way to avoid a fight is to not be there in the first place. Location, location, location. Gads ! I sound like a realtor.

Anyhoo, I invite your opinions of what I have guessed at here. But ask yourself how many folks you know who are prepped AND have a secure location. Even many of the members here on GIM are not fully prepped by the above standards. Prepping is a process; it takes lots of money, time and determination. No criticism here; just the best of wishes for others doing all they can to be ready. Im not fully prepped but doing what I can too.

Something wicked this way comes. I feel it in my bones. Im not naturally a negative person. It may look that way. But I have to face the truth as I see it and defend myself. Prepping is defense against the evil, falsehoods and greed out there.

Lately Ive been seeing a lot of things that dont make sense. Well, not sense to the sane mind. Conclusion: it makes sense to the insane mind. Yikes ! Im scaring myself.

Best wishes,

agnut

That would be $100,000 in PMs for a family of four - i would guess the numbers are less than 1,000 family's in all of the US.
